Kick Off Communication
The easiest way to concede or be on the back foot straight away is at Kick off. We use the ‘(team) defending’ or ‘(team) I got it!’ in game emotes to call who goes for the ball. For the kick offs where two people may go for the same ball, make sure you are not going for the same ball, or at least one person goes for it. There is literally no point in conceding early and learning this basic form of communication will help eliminate this. This is the most basic thing that I keep seeing people get wrong! Also if you want to try a fancy follow up kick off, or cheeky miss the ball on purpose kick off.. Make sure you’ve practiced this over and over. By the time you play competitive you’ll be a threat straight from kick off which is already going to put you at an advantage.

One of the hardest things to do are aerials. This requires you to practice and practice and probably a little bit more practice. Just understand that the physics behind this will never change and you can be in control if you trust the car in flight. I recommend doing a flat jump and tilt back to boost upwards, and work from there. Boosting at full speed in to an aerial is probably the most difficult thing to do, whilst also being the most common. Do this to hit the ball harder & further.
In all situations aerials favour those who jump earliest, so try and get a grasp of the wall bounces as this will be key to you getting to the ball first. Once this has been done you will be jumping earlier and earlier, then before you know it winning more than most aerials. Then you’ll start to see the game like the matrix, just code. I’m joking of course, but that would be cool as hell.
Keep the ball alive
It sounds simple but when you’re attacking keep the ball in the danger zone. If you can’t score just chip it up for the next person coming in, if they can’t score, they will chip it up. It makes the defences scramble and before you know it the ball has dropped in to a ‘scorable’ position. In 3v3’s this is really fun, keep hitting it against the back wall and watch the opposition scramble. You’ll be taking the boosts, and eventually you’ll wear them too thin and your pressure will pay off. Playing the ball in to the corner is often a good plan too, it takes it away from the opposition and often pops up in to a juicy cross. The higher up you go the more likely this cross will be defended, so make sure you anticipate the opponent hitting it, rather than getting on the end of the cross. This will keep the ball alive for much longer and keep that pressure on the opponent strong!

Keep your teamwork fluid. If you notice someone going ahead of you, be wary of your defence. Assume you will have to get back first when the time comes rather than marauding forward with no care for defence. The last person should be the anchor who stops the counter, whilst the furthest forward instantly come back once they have made their forward play. Once teams play for longer together you soon recognise the importance of positioning and rotating. Find team mates who are able to work to your strengths. If you’re good in the air you’re likely to be the aggressor, and you want to avoid all of the team going for the same ball! If you notice this is happening just take a step back and play more passively. You’ll pick up more loose balls this way and have plenty of long shots (plus your points total will look high this way!)
Practice, Practice and… PRACTICE!
It goes without saying but the more time you play the more you start to learn the physics of Rocket League. Yes it’s difficult, yes it can be BS and yes you will find you have a win % of about 50 throughout your entire rocket league life no matter how good you get. But let me tell you now there is no better method to getting better than playing the game. What are you waiting for? Jump on now! See you at Champion level where you will be able to find me..
